Who We Are

Housing Solutions, Inc. (HS) was founded in 1980 as an affordable housing development organization. There were plans to close HS and in 2004 the board appointed two new directors—Eric Friedman and Terry O’Bryant in place of the previous board. In 2006, HS added two board  members and changed its name to Housing & Community Solutions, Inc. (HCSI) and expanded its mission to include community and economic development.

HCSI’s mission is to build sustainable and diverse communities through projects that promote collaboration, community and economic revitalization in the St. Louis region.

HCSI’s vision is to make St. Louis an inclusive and energized community where people of all social, racial and economic backgrounds, will want to live, work and play.

Champion, Catalyst & Collaborator

Some of the projects our President, Eric Friedman, has championed, acted as a catalyst for and collaborated with others to Move St. Louis and the Region Forward, all about building sustainable communities:

  • People's West End Free Clinic

Founder. This is now known as the People's Free Clinic on Delmar and DeBalivere.

  • Lift for Life Charter School

Founder, Board Chair, helped acquire, finance and develop the School Building and acquire 3 other properties.

  • Coalition for Historic Preservation and Economic Development

The group that got the Missouri Historic Tax Credit passed, and the Neighborhood Preservation and Rebuilding Communities program started. These programs have created a new downtown, with 5,000 new residents, 100 buildings renovated, first population increase in the city in 50 years, and created 43,000 jobs across the state in 66 communities throughout Missouri.

The Wall Street Journal calls the Missouri Historic Tax Credit "a national model."

  • Central Reform Congregation

Eric is a founder, first communications Vice President, and original board member. He also headed the building development committee for five years that purchased the property and developed the temple at Kingshighway and Waterman.

  • Commercial Information Exchange (CIE)

Eric is a founder and original board member of CIE. This is a Realtors Association real time commercial properties database and email network that allows the region to be more competitive and puts a sign on the "Internet highway" for St. Louis, locating and keeping companies here.
